Pleisters vir die siel 2

Pleisters vir die siel 2

deur Riekert Botha, ISBN:9780620461733, R139.00, Order Now

Dit was vir my 'n enorme bemoediging en aansporing.

Shoreline - Discovering South Africa's Coast

ISBN:9781770077942, R300.00, Order Now

Shoreline: Discovering South Africa's Coast
South Africa's coast stretches for some 2800 kilometres, from the Orange River and the arid Diamond Coast to the subtropical region bordering Mozambique. Washed by the Atlantic and Indian oceans, and influenced by the powerful Benguela and Agulhas currents, the line where land meets sea is a rich and fertile zone that provides habitat for many animals and plants, from whales and sharks to tiny lichens and immense indigenous trees. A journey along the coastline also reveals the intriguing traces of some of the earliest settlements in Africa and the contested sites of South Africa's troubled past.Shoreline - Discovering South Africa's Coast is a groundbreaking blend of natural history, archaeology and human stories. Based on the highly acclaimed SABC2 television series, the book presents the wonder and diversity of South Africa's coast in an odyssey that takes readers through some of the most beautiful and scenic spots on the planet - from the great gannet colony on Malgas Island to the calving grounds of the Southern right whale in Walker Bay and the nesting sites of sea turtles on the Zululand coast.
Never before has the splendour of South Africa's coast been portrayed in such detail. Spectacular aerial photography reveals the physical features of the shoreline in a whole new way. Engaging and lively text, drawing on the insights and research of a broad range of scientists and other experts, interweaves three main themes: the amazing adaptations made by plants and animals to challenging conditions; the fascinating and varied history of human activity along the coastline; and the archaeological discoveries that are shedding light on the very dawn of modern human behaviour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to Surprise Anyone, 19 April 2010
This review is from: Oprah: A Biography (Hardcover)
I have just finished reading the book and it was pretty much what I thought it would be. No new surprises and actually nothing really offensive in it that Oprah should worry about. She is human and has made mistakes and you simply do not get to where she is today without stepping on a few toes. There is no one who doesn't have things in their past that they either omit or embellish on as time goes by. The book is not a bad read but nothing less or nothing more.

by T.V.Bulpin, ISBN:9781869193324, R225.00, Order Now

(quoted from http://www.proteaboekhuis.com)

The Sea of Zanj has been a place of myth and mystery since time immemorial, and its islands have captured countless imaginations. Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues, the Seychelles and Madagascar – T.V. Bulpin recounts their stories and histories; stories of strange animals and exotic places, of pirates and runaway slaves, of forgotten kingdoms and deadly welcomes.
Much has changed in the islands since Islands in a forgotten sea first appeared in the 1950s, and the author has left an invaluable account of an enchanting and often brutal world far removed from the air-conditioned resorts and package tours so familiar to tourists today.

Great Military Disasters

Great Military Disasters from Cannae to Stalingrad

by Julian Spilsbury, ISBN:9781848660397, R224.95, Order Now

Book overview

Born as a Germanic tongue with the arrival in Britain of the Anglo-Saxons in the early medieval period, heavily influenced by Norman French from the 11th century, and finally emerging as modern English from the late Middle Ages, the English language has grown to become the linguistic equivalent of a superpower, and is now sometimes described as the world's lingua franca. Worldwide some 380 million people speak English as a first language and some 600 million as a second language. A staggering one billion people are believed to be learning it. English is the premier international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, and diplomacy and also on the Internet. It has been one of the official languages of the United Nations since its founding in 1945. It is considered by many good judges to be well on the way to becoming the world's first universal language. Author Philip Gooden tells the story of the English language in all its richness and variety. From the intriguing origins and changing definitions of common words such as 'OK', 'beserk', 'curfew', 'cabal' and 'pow-wow', to the massive transformations wrought in the vocabulary and structure of the language by Anglo-Saxon and Norman conquest, through to the literary triumphs of Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales and the works of Shakespeare. The Story of English is a fascinating tale of linguistic, social and cultural transformation, and one that is accessibly and authoritatively told by an author in perfect command of his material.

Book overview

* When Paul McCartney told the world in 1970 that he had no plans to work with the Beatles again, it was widely viewed as a cultural tragedy by the media and public alike. His statement not only marked the end of the band's remarkable career, but also seemed to signal the demise of an era of unprecedented optimism in cultural history. But posterity would not let go of the group so easily and one of the most fascinating phases of the Beatle's story was just about to begin. For almost 40 years the four members of the group, their families and business partners, have been forced to live with the reverberations of their incredible success. Now, for the first time, You Never Give Me Your Money tells the dramatic story of the personal and business rivalry that has dominated the Beatles' lives since 1969.

A People Betrayed

 A People Betrayed

Sub Title: the Role of the West in Rwanda's Genocide

Author: Linda Melvern

Description

Events in Rwanda in 1994 mark a landmark in the history of modern genocide. Up to one million people were killed in a planned public and political campaign. In the face of indisputable evidence, the Security Council of the United Nations failed to respond.

In this classic of investigative journalism, Linda Melvern tells the compelling story of what happened. She holds governments to account, showing how individuals could have prevented what was happening and didn't do so. The book also reveals the unrecognized heroism of those who stayed on during the genocide, volunteer peacekeepers and those who ran emergency medical care.

Fifteen years on, this new edition examines the ongoing impact of the 1948 Genocide Convention and the shock waves Rwanda caused around the world. Based on fresh interviews with key players and newly-released documents, A People Betrayed is a shocking indictment of the way Rwanda is and was forgotten and how today it is remembered in the West.

About the Author

Linda Melvern is an investigative journalist and writer. For four years she was a reporter with The Sunday Times, including as a member of their award-winning Insight Team. Since leaving the paper to write her first book, she has written widely for the British press and also lectures on international issues.

African Survival

African Survival

Hein Vosloo, ISBN:9780620459891, R179.00, Order Now

(excerpt from http://www.survivalx-pert.com/)

A new survival book by Hein Vosloo

This long awaited book is not only a very necessary and handy survival guide to the harsh African conditions but also an autobiography of the man himself. Hein has now put pen to paper to share some of his vast wilderness survival knowledge and techniques with us. Funny stories and serious survival techniques, most of which were learned the hard way by the author, and a mass of other very interesting information, make this a must read for all outdoor enthusiasts.

From hikers, campers and caravaners to explorers and mountain climbers this book is an essential part of your gear.
Hein as we all know has had an interesting television career, appearing in shows like Survivor Malaysia and Woes, and  now a cameo appearance on Celebrity survivor, on the island of Santa Carolina. The fact that the creators of Survivor asked Hein to be their gift to the survivors is a testimony to his status as South Africa's survivor man.
The first time most of us heard about Hein Vosloo was when he caused a sensation by being the first person on the Survivor franchise, anywhere in the world, to make fire using only natural means. Usually the survivors are at the  mercy of mother nature until they win a reward and get flint or after the first tribal council when they are able to take their torches back to their camps. Hein redefined the rules and showed that it can be done the old way,
long before modern day conveniences.
Hein has lived in areas and shelters most of us would consider harsh and unliveable, minus the comforts we consider necessities these days. And, it seems this is where he is happiest.

He hasn't pursued possesions and positions that make up a normal supposedly successful life, instead he has followed the path less travelled and in so doing gained an immense amount of knowledge about Africa and it's animals.
This books stories and experiences are written honestly and will be much appreciated by those who wander through Africa's wilderness, near or far, and ensures that you, the reader, are better equipped to survive in a tough situation, find shelter, eat, drink and obtain rescue. This book could save your life!

China in Africa

Title: China in Africa

Author: Chris Alden

Description

Nowhere in the world is China's rapid rise to power more evident than in Africa. From multi-billion dollar investments in oil and minerals to the influx of thousands of merchants, labourers and cheap consumer goods, China's economic and political reach is redefining Africa's traditional ties with the international community. This book investigates the emerging relationship between China and Africa to determine whether this engagement will be that of a development partner, economic competitor or new hegemony. Alden argues that in order to understand Chinese involvement on the continent, we need to recognize the range of economic, diplomatic and security rationales behind Beijing's Africa policy as well as the response of African elites to China's entreaties. Only then can the new challenges and opportunities for Africa and the West be accurately assessed.

Contents

1. China's New Foreign Policy towards Africa
2. The Chinese in Africa: Capitalist, Comrades and Carpetbaggers

Eggs to lay, chickens to hatch

Chris van Wyk, ISBN:9781770101739, R195.00, Order Now

Agnes, the Van Wyks’ Zulu domestic worker, had a special friendship with young Chris in the late sixties to early seventies. He would defend her whenever she came to work with a babalaas on a Monday morning and made a mess of the cleaning. In turn, Agnes never told on Chris when he played truant from school.
As the years passed, the two grew closer, swopping stories about coloureds and Zulus, life in Riverlea and Soweto, pass laws, politics and falling in love. She taught him to count in Zulu and he promised to teach her to read in English.
Whenever the clock ran against her, Agnes would stop almost in mid-sentence, grab a broom or cloth, and declare: ‘I have to rush. I have eggs to lay, chickens to hatch.’
What an odd, ungrammatical thing to say, Chris often mused. But many years later, he played a CD by Louis Jordan, a 1940s American jazz singer, and it all became clear.
Eggs to Lay, Chickens to Hatch is Chris van Wyk’s second childhood memoir about growing up in Riverlea and his colourful interactions with the men and women who lived the African proverb that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. But mostly it is the story of a wonderful friendship between a young coloured boy and a Zulu woman.

The Boy who harnessed the wind

The boy who harnessed the wind

Book overview

When William Kamkwamba was just 14 years old his parents told him that he must leave school and come and work on the family farm as they could no longer afford to $80 a year tuition fees. This is the story of his refusal to give up on learning and reading. A story of passion, determination and remarkable achievements.Malawi is a country battling AIDS, drought and famine, and in 2002, a season of floods, followed by the most severe famine in fifty years, brought it to its knees. Like the majority of the population, William's family were farmers. They were totally reliant of the maize crop. By the end of 2001, after many lean and difficult years, there was no more crop. They were running out of food - had nothing to sell - and had months until they would be able to harvest their crop again.Forced to leave school at 14 years old, with no hope of raising the funds to go again, William resorted to borrowing books from the small local library to continue his education. One day, browsing the titles, he picked up a book about energy, with a picture of a wind turbine on the front cover. Fascinated by science and electricity, but knowing little more about the technology, William decided to build his own. Ridiculed by those around him, and exhausted from his work in the fields every day, and using nothing more than bits of scrap metal, old bicycle parts and wood from the blue gum tree, he slowly built his very own windmill. This windmill has changed the world in which William and his family live. Only 2 per cent of Malawi has electricity; William's windmill now powers the lightbulbs and radio for his compound. He has since built more windmills for his school and his village. When news of William's invention spread, people from across the globe offered to help him. Soon he was re-enrolled in college and travelling to America to visit wind farms. This is his incredible story.William's dream is that other African's will learn to help themselves ' one windmill and one light bulb at a time ' and that maybe one day they will be able to power their own computers, and use the internet, and see for themselves how his life has changed after picking up that book in the library.

South Africa's Brave New World

South Africa's Brave New World

by R.W.Johnson, ISBN:9780141000329, R240.00, Order Now

Nelson Mandela's inauguration as president of South Africa in 1994 seemed to usher in an age of peaceful, rational change. But R. W. Johnson's major new book explains how this was not to be. The profound damage of apartheid and the country's new leaders - in exile or prison for much of their adult lives - were a disastrous combination that poisoned everything from big business to education and AIDS policy to relations with Zimbabwe. At the heart of the book lies the figure of Thabo Mbeki, whose presidency led to catastrophic failure on almost every front. In South Africa's Brave New World Johnson reveals how Mbeki and those around him brought South Africa close to 'failed state' status - and explores the implications for its future.
